the pinoy step is a move that involves adding a shot fake at the start of a drive to the basket. it’s a shifty move that, when used right, messes up the defender’s timing and creates a clear path to the rim:
unlike the euro step, which goes all the way back to the 1960s, the pinoy step is unmistakably a product of filipino hoopers—both pros and amateurs—over the past decade. kiefer ravena was one of the first to use it and helped put it on the map. there’s footage of him pulling it off back in high school in 2010.
and now it’s everywhere. mikal bridges, tyrese haliburton, jalen green, grayson allen, brandin podziemski... if you watch an nba game in 2025, odds are you’ll see at least one pinoy step every night.
